Maxwell throwing the distance
Joseph Maxwell continues to set the bar for himself and other shotputters nationwide. The Evansville native, who is just shy of his 18th birthday, recently set a Canadian indoor shot-put record for those under 20 — beating the previous record of 19.13 metres with a 19.22 metre throw. He stated that the competition was tough at first, as he struggled to find his rhythm in his first two attempts. And with a previous personal best of 18.24 metres, his winning throw came as a bit of a surprise: “It is a big jump and makes me happy that all the hard work and training I’ve been doing is paying off.” Now that his indoor competition season is over, Maxwell will be heading to Florida for eight days as part of the Athletics Ontario Training Camp. Afterwards, he will compete in qualifying rounds for the world junior championships, to be held in July in Poland.
